Alex Pella’s “Maxicat Victoria” arrived Saturday afternoon at Marina del Odiel, in Huelva, positioned and ready to start their next record. As soon as the weather conditions are optimal, they will set off to try to beat the record of the Discovery Route. This voyage covers a non-stop round trip between Europe and America. The goal is to try to beat the current record, set in February 2013, by the Spanish “Mapfre” team, in 11 days, 7 hours and 40 seconds.
The first leg of the record, between Huelva and La Gomera, will start next week and should be completed in about 48 hours. “Thanks for the welcome here in Marina del Odiel, boat and crew are ready to go and waiting for a good weather window. What we need is for the Azores anticyclone to stabilize so that we have north winds on this descent towards La Gomera. We know that with this situation we will be able to beat the record in this first leg”, said Alex Pella during the press conference held today in Marina del Odiel. For his part, the managing director of Marina del Odiel, Manuel Jimenez has assured that “we are delighted to host this magnificent boat and of course its crew, within this great project to break all records. For us it is a real pleasure to have you here and enjoy the proximity of our marina to the center of Huelva. Wishing you good winds for the feat you want to emulate, the one that Elcano did 500 years ago. And, the president of the Real Club Marítimo y Tenis de Punta Umbría, Luis Marquínez, who also participated in the press conference said that “we want to promote the union of all the ports of the province, which we believe is the only way that the world of sailing and sailing has a boom and a project like yours gives us all presence and visibility. Thank you and I hope you beat all the records and come back to Huelva to celebrate them”.
The second leg of this crossing, between La Gomera and San Salvador (Bahamas), should be completed in 9 days. The crew of “Maxicat Victoria” will be completed by Lalou Roucayrol, Alejandro Cantero, Alberto Muñoz, Pablo Santurde, Pilar Casares and Manuel Maqueda.
